Welcome!
The team at Steppe have been hard at work producing Steppe 6, which is now printed and on its way to subscribers. The magazine includes a thirty-page
photographic
essay on the subject of water in Tajikistan by award-winning photographer Carolyn Drake; a twelve-page feature on the burial garden of the Emperor
Babur in Kabul; a guide to the past and present of Uzbekistan's renowned silk ikat weaving; a photo-essay depicting the changing landscape of western
Kazakhstan as a result of the 'oil revolution'; and a feature on a handful of Buddhist monks who are reconnecting with 'Central Asian nomadic
spirituality'; plus
much much
more, including a cookery section, culture, hotel, restaurant and
book reviews, and ... more still! Click on the Moghul-period miniature of a Babur-era garden in Afghanistan (above left) to find out
more or to download a list of the magazine's entire contents.

Issues (see above) are only a click away and can be shipped anywhere in
the world. A subscription to Steppe also makes the perfect present,
whether you want your friends to share in the beauty of the magazine,
or perhaps
you
live in
Central Asia
and have cousins, aunts, uncles, parents or friends who endlessly ask
what Central Asia is really like.
Ikat on Film
For those of you who are interested in silk ikat, we have been pointed in the direction of a You Tube video shot
at the Yodgorlik Factory in Marghilan in 2003 which gives a complete representation of the silk-making process. Click on the picture of the cocoons
(below left) to be taken to the video, and thank you to Alison Nunn for the tip.
Afghanistan at the Tricyle
As for the Afghanistan events currently on at the Tricycle theatre in Kilburn, we can not recommend the set of
Great Game plays, shown in three parts, more highly. They allow amateurs and historians alike a whole new sense of perspective on both the historical
and the ongoing conflicts in the country. Click on the Great Game picture (below left) to be taken to the Tricycle's website.
In the meantime, there will be more from Steppe in mid-summer. We hope you enjoy your copies of Steppe 6; don't
hesitate to be in touch (info@steppemagazine.com) if you have something Steppe-related to say.
All the best from everyone here...
